10 reasons to visit Grodno: from obvious to exclusive
Capital of Culture in Belarus – over the years it is the informal name of the city of Grodno. It is loved and appreciated for a special European spirit, wandering around small and quiet central streets, a beautiful and unique architecture, which is cared for or not even taken into account, a slowness and deliberateness, in which you'd definitely like to immerse. Everyone will find in Grodno something of their own, and this something will constantly draw attention to itself and make come back.
We propose 10 reasons why you should visit Grodno
The Old and New Grodno Castles. This place is the best option, if you want to form some opinion not only of the city but of the country as well. The Old Castle is the point of reference in the history of the city, the best view, the place where the King of Poland Stefan Batory lived and ruled. New Castle was the summer residence of the kings and the venue of Soims of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. There you can find many museum rooms as well.
Augustow Canal. It is located not in the city, but in attractive proximity to it. It is considered to be one of the biggest European channels. In recent years it has become even better and more beautiful. An international bicycle racing "Susedzі", where you can test your strength, is held there every summer.
The Kalozha Church of Sts. Boris and Gleb. A unique monument of the 12th century. Every tourist should touch an old plinth brick and decode the secret messages of the past. Noone knows how many more the church will stand: there is a probability of collapse.
Choral Synagogue. It’s being actively repaired now. There is a museum of Jewish history in it. The opening of the dining room and library is planned in the near future there.

Brigitsky Church and wooden lyamus (quincha). Old lyamus is the most aged construction in the country, which dates back to the 17th century. It's hard to get on the territory of the church, but you can always fix up with the security guard. Interesting fact: just a while ago the temple functioned as a psychiatric hospital.
Catholic and Orthodox cemeteries. They are located literally in the heart of the city. These cemeteries are the oldest in the territory of Belarus. Some burials date back even to the 18th century. Gravestones decoration sometimes amazes with its elegance and luxury. Many famous people were buried in these cemeteries: Eliza Orzeszkowa, mother of Maxim Bogdanovich, a member of the War of 1812 Sergei Lansky and many others.
